"As this resolution says, EU accession will guarantee a coherent European legal framework to prevent and combat violence against women and gender-based violence and to protect the victims of violence.
I welcome the Commission’s proposal for EU accession to the Istanbul Convention. The Council and the Commission must speed up the process, sign and ratify the Convention without reservations. Member States who have not ratified it yet, including the UK, must do so, and the Convention must be implemented at national and European levels.
Gender—based violence must be tackled holistically, from the perspective of it being a human rights violation, a safety and security risk, a criminal issue, as well as a health, and culture and education issue. These issues must all be tackled in a concerted effort to eliminate the violence that so many women and LGBTI people face daily."@en1
