"Mr President, Gui Minhai, also known as Michael Gui, is a Chinese—born Swedish scholar and, importantly from my point of view, a Hong Kong—based book publisher. He was a prolific author, and probably still would be but for his current situation, of books regarding Chinese politics and political figures. He went ‘missing’, presumed abducted, 13 months ago. As a British MEP, I am citing his case today given the relationship between the United Kingdom and China following the handover of Hong Kong. Gui Minhai appears – and I emphasise ‘appears’ – to have been the subject of an unlawful rendition by Chinese law enforcers. If so, international law has been violated by his kidnappers. This abduction and that of his colleagues represents enforced disappearance, which violates a range of fundamental human rights. No country has the right to snatch people and then hold them against their will, seemingly with the involvement and connivance of a national government. I today call upon China to release Gui Minhai and his colleagues and, in doing so, to demonstrate to the world its adherence to human rights legislation. In doing so, China will gain international respect and acclaim for such action. I would be delighted to initiate such appreciation and acknowledgment in this parliamentary chamber as soon as Guy Minhai is released."@en1
