"Mr President, the repeated scandals involving European Commissioners have to stop. The anger over Barroso’s plum new role in Goldman Sachs extends right across the political spectrum. More importantly, it extends far beyond this Chamber to the millions of citizens who have borne the brunt of the austerity policies which he imposed. Add Juncker and LuxLeaks, Arias Cañete in the Panama Papers, and Kroes in the Bahamas Leaks, and we see the corrosive impact of corruption in the European institutions. We are not talking about conflicts of interest – it is full—blown corruption. Barroso shows that the 18—month cooling—off period in the Code of Conduct is entirely inadequate. It should be five years at least. Sanctions must apply for breaches of the Treaty obligation on Commissioners to act with integrity. But we need more. I urge the Ombudsman’s office to take a lead on closing the Commission’s revolving door. Ombudsman, there is a lot faith in this Chamber in your ability to do that."@en1
