"Mr President, I would like to say to the Ombudsman that her work has really been invaluable for us in increasing transparency in the European Union. In the face of rising populism, transparency is vital for the long—term legitimacy of the European Union. Coming from the UK, that is something which is very dear to my heart. Ombudsman, I strongly support your work in opening up the black boxes of EU decision—making, but to do this we need to go further. I would like to highlight three areas. We should ensure that the transparency that has been achieved around the TTIP negotiations is replicated for all EU trade negotiations. We should see the publication of all documents both from trialogues between the Parliament, Council and Commission on proposed legislation, and from Commission expert groups. Transparency is crucial to rebuild trust in the European project. Democracy is a fragile flower and transparency and public debate are its water and feedstock. So going into a new year, I would plead that you remain a good gardener."@en1
