"Mr President, I would like to thank all the speakers tonight for their support and their kind words about this report. It is also very good to hear that the Commission is starting implementation. But, as with any of this, the important thing is enforcement and making sure that we do what we say we are signed up to do. So we will be looking to you, Commissioner, to make sure that that is done.
On the issue of trophy hunting: trophy hunting pretends to be about conservation. If it was about conservation we would not have a problem, but there are tens of thousands of animals taken from the wild and it is creating a market for illegal trophies and putting money into big businesses. It is not helping local communities. It is not helping the animals.
It is very complicated to stop wildlife trafficking. The source countries need help. We need to stop the money laundering and the gun running. I am very pleased to hear about the online marketplace, which is also a really growing market. Biodiversity is under huge pressure; climate change and human pressure on wildlife areas are adding to that, but wildlife trafficking is a concerted attack for profit. It is heart-breaking to see what is happening.
Out there are brave game rangers risking their lives, and others are facing determined criminals. We face telling our children: once there were elephants, or rhinos, or redwood trees. This action plan is good, but so far it is just a paper document. We have to work altogether to turn that into action, and quickly. The biosphere is under attack. It is the life-sustaining system of our planet and it is the beautiful result of millions of years of evolution. Without action now we will lose most of it forever. We in the EU can and must protect it, and we can set an example for the rest of the world about how we can do it. This report and action plan is the start of a journey. Please support my report, and then we can really get to work on tackling this horrible crime."@en1
