"Mr President, I would like to thank the rapporteur Mrs Bearder, who brings her usual rigour and enthusiasm to this subject and it is very welcome. We need to start taking wildlife trafficking more seriously. It is a transnational organised crime, which requires a suitably serious and coordinated response. It has far-reaching implications; not only does it contribute to biodiversity loss and species extinction, it also helps to fund organised criminal groups which undermine regional stability and the rule of law. I believe in smart regulation, and that means clear and enforceable rules with an absolute minimum of derogations and exceptions. No excuses and no confusion. On that basis, I would like to echo Mr Eck’s call for consideration of a trade ban on exotic species, because all the way through these discussions I ask myself why do we need to trade legally in these species at all. I fully support the calls for a more coordinated joined-up approach to combating wildlife trafficking across different policy areas such as trade, development, foreign affairs, justice and home affairs, and I wish her every success with this report."@en1
