"Mr President, I would like first to commend the rapporteur, Mr Langen, for his work on this file, as well as the Commission for its continuing endeavours to clamp down on VAT fraud. Any new VAT system must of course promote economic growth in a sustainable way, while protecting public policy objectives. In that regard, I would like to underline the need for the European Commission to speedily make clear when and how it will honour its pledge to introduce a VAT threshold for small businesses engaged in cross-border trade of e-services. Many British firms have had a very difficult time adjusting to the new VAT system, with little help from the current British Government. I hope that the Commission at least can help them by stating exactly when, and at what level, the threshold will be reintroduced. I would also like to underline the need for the Commission and Member States to work to exempt essential products from VAT, not least sanitary products. VAT is a regressive tax, when applied to sanitary products like tampons and towels, it becomes a sexist tax too."@en1
