"Mr President, 1973 will forever stand in the history of Britain as a year of infamy. On 1 January that year, as a consequence of the Prime Minister Ted Heath’s signature, we joined the EU. Later that year, his Chancellor Lord Barber introduced VAT into the UK. The VAT is really an example of everything that is wrong about the European Union. It started at 10% but has grown to 20%. It is swollen in size and complexity. In the UK, it has 3 200 pages of tax legislation, and as the Commissioner said: it cannot cope with innovation or start-ups.130 countries, have adopted it, yes, but one significant country – the United States – has not. It is more innovative and is more flexible, and has an economy greater and better than that of those in the European Union. Just as the British people recognised and reversed a decision of Ted Heath and his huge deceit on sovereignty, on Brexit the UK Government has a huge opportunity to reverse VAT and have a more flexible regime in taxation."@en1
