"Mr President, by exiting the EU Britain will soon restore full sovereignty over taxation matters. We will be able to abolish VAT and design our own sales tax suited to our own country. That tax could be flexible: if we like, we could charge a higher rate on sectors dominated by imports; we could choose to levy higher rates for luxury goods and lower rates for staple goods, thereby countering objections to the regressive nature of VAT. The great thing is that it will be up to us. Our democracy will be restored, and where issues arise we will be able to address them without needing the European Commission’s say-so. The government of the fifth largest economy in the world will even acquire the power to make its own decisions on the taxation of sanitary products. You lot can work towards a standard VAT regime controlled by Brussels. We will set our own taxes, thank you very much."@en1
