"Mr President, as we have heard from the previous three speakers, Jordan is facing a very serious financial and economic crisis brought on by the instability in the region and the refugee flows coming from that. According to the UNHCR, there are 650 000 refugees, and as we have heard from the Commissioner, possibly a million, and as we have heard from Mr Cicu, possibly 1.4 million. That is a significant number no matter how you measure it. Yet despite its economic difficulties, Jordan has not followed the example of other countries in Europe and around the world. It is not calling for walls to be built around its nation. On the contrary, it has shown a remarkable generosity to its neighbours and has kept its borders open. Because of that generosity, we should be as generous as possible to the country. Jordan, also in difficult circumstances, continues to have an effective democratic system. It includes a multi-party parliamentary system. It respects the rule of law and human rights in Jordan are guaranteed, and of course, these are all preconditions for receiving MFA. Like the rapporteur, I am disappointed that we could not have been more generous, but also like the rapporteur, I am pleased that during the trilogue we managed to find a compromise that at least looks like we can promise more money to Jordan in 2017, if the need arises. I strongly support this agreement and congratulate both the rapporteur and the Commission on their work."@en1
