"The objection focused exclusively on procedural aspects of this pesticide authorisation. For one, certain data had still been requested from the applicant in the so-called ‘confirmatory data procedure’, a practice which had been heavily criticised by the European Ombudsman in a Decision from February 2016. On top of that, the Commission granted the authorisation for a full 15 years despite this lack of data on human and animal toxicity as well as ecotoxicity, as stated in the EFSA review.
The original authorisation for bentazone was granted in August 2001 and expired at the end of 2015. However, COM Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/549 extended the expiry date for bentazone by 1.5 years until 30 June 2017 in order to allow the renewal process to be completed before the expiry of the approval. The current draft Implementing Regulation proposes to renew the authorisation of bentazone until January 2032.
The European Parliament has no formal right of veto on this Implementing Regulation but can give its opinion prior to the vote by the Member States. The draft was presented to the Standing Committee on Phytopharmaceuticals for opinion in the meeting of 7/8 October."@en1
