"Mr President, sign languages represent Europe’s multicultural and multilingual heritage, and I am pleased to offer my support for improving the quality of the sign language interpreting profession. Hard-of-hearing, deaf and deaf—blind citizens should not be disabled by their working environment from equal access to the same information and communication as their peers. In Ireland the Recognition of Irish Sign Language for the Deaf Community Bill 2016 is currently being reviewed. This would mean, if passed, that Irish sign language would be designated as a native and independent language – one which is used as a permanent means of communication by over 5 000 members of the deaf community. Additionally, GPs can now easily access professional sign language interpreters for deaf medical care patients, thanks to a new agreement between the health authority, HSE, and the sign language interpreting service. I think we are heading in the right direction. In particular, I look forward to discussion on how to utilise language technologies in providing equal access for all to the digital space."@en1
