My position and voting decisions should not – I would emphasise – be interpreted as defending Russia, or even supporting Russia, but rather as registering my support for stopping the EU from needlessly aggravating what is acknowledged to be a poor and increasingly negative relationship with Russia. Contributing to a return of the Cold War mentality is unhelpful, and binding the United Kingdom to such inflammatory and confrontational statements is not in my country’s interests."@en1
