"This directive is an important step towards addressing the high health risks and environmental impacts posed by air pollution. Poor air quality is responsible for over 400 000 premature deaths each year and its economic cost for health is estimated at between EUR 300 billion and EUR 900 billion every year. Around 90% of Europeans living in cities are exposed to levels of air pollution deemed damaging to human health, and many vulnerable socio-demographic groups, such as the elderly, are particularly affected. Measures to address dangerous pollutants covering all sectors are urgently needed. This deal will cut the number of premature deaths from toxic air by almost half by 2030, forcing governments across Europe to act and ensuring, for the first time, that all polluting sectors, including agriculture, take responsibility for their emissions. Member States now need to act to fully implement the directive and furthermore step up their ambition in the fight against air pollution."@en1
