"If CETA were a genuine move towards free trade, and one which was designed to benefit working people, then I would be fully supportive of it. Free trade is important for economic development, and indeed one of the arguments for Brexit is that it will enable us to negotiate free trade deals with countries around the world.
However, CETA appears to be another deal which will support big business whilst hampering small business, and I have huge concerns about the proposed investor-state dispute resolution provisions. In the current case, I voted in favour of the resolution (and, in effect, against CETA) for three reasons:
1. The European Union must not break its own rules, and therefore legal questions should be resolved first.
2. If legal questions are not resolved before the adoption of CETA, it creates the potential for confusion and loss of business.
3. Regardless, this vote would in any case have served to cause a delay in the implementation of a bad deal."@en1
