"Madam President, yesterday I returned from my second visit to Turkey in less than a month, and I can report that the climate of state repression continues unabated, particularly against HDP political opponents and civil society. Erdoğan’s forces are cranking up the level of fear and intimidation amongst the population, using the smokescreen of a state of emergency to carry out a policy that looks very much like ethnic cleansing in Kurdistan. Having bombed and cleared whole neighbourhoods in Sur and Nusaybin, parents are now denied the right to bury their children killed in the process. The shutting-down of media outlets reporting from the ground means that the world does not know what is happening. Turkey is fast slipping into a fascist state, and we must rethink our relationship with our European neighbour, because European values of democracy and human rights are being sorely tested. When an elected member of the AKP ruling party can bring forward a bill that legalises the rape of a minor by means of child marriage, we should all worry about how things will end."@en1
