"Madam President, Madam Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the last time I spoke about Syria I called for a no-fly zone against Syrian Government planes. I repeat this plea again as an urgent and necessary measure to ensure civilian protection. The need to protect civilians is paramount to any political process. Residents of Aleppo are at risk of extermination if we do not act now.
If we cannot trust Assad and Russia to stop bombing hospitals and schools how can we trust them to engage with them and implement a political solution? All EU states should develop and implement mechanisms to ensure that war criminals from the Syrian conflict are held to account. This is especially critical in light of Russia's veto of any accountability mechanism through the UN Security Council. I welcome the recent decisions to review EU sanctions against Syria. However, more needs to be done in this regard. Europeans want sanctions against the Assad regime, Russia and Iran."@en1
