"This proposal has the objective of supporting and strengthening action by the competent authorities of the Member States and their mutual cooperation in preventing and combating organised crime, terrorism and other forms of serious crime affecting two or more Member States, and may concern the exchange of operational, strategic or technical information, including personal data and classified information. The conclusion of this new international agreement is proposed on the basis of the Europol Council Decision as it is currently in force (Decision 2009/371/JHA). However, the EP and Council have concluded negotiations on a new Regulation for Europol (), in which the procedure for concluding international agreements, as well as the relevant provisions and safeguards for the classification of EU documents or the protection of personal data of European citizens, are significantly modified, which follows the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. Therefore, I abstained from the final vote in order to defend the role of the Parliament and ensure proper scrutiny of the agreement."@en1
