"Madam President, it is quite right that we have measures that prevent terrorist funds being used to terrorise the citizens of Europe. It is also quite right that governments should seek to prevent aggressive tax avoidance and that is why we have international organisations working on both money laundering and tax avoidance.
These proposals include provisions that make banks and financial institutions give information to tax authorities. These proposals therefore make banks an extension of the tax authorities, i.e. their police. Furthermore, the creation of lists of European citizens’ assets is very concerning to those who believe in independence and freedom and liberty of the individual. It reminds me a little bit of the quote by the Irish writer C. S. Lewis: ‘the safest road to hell is the gradual one – the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turning, without milestones, without signposts’.
My concern here is that there are no provisions in this directive or in the legislation that we seek that stop phishing exercises by tax authorities against legitimate individuals. There are no provisions here to prevent privacy being taken away bit by bit and slowly but surely. We must all seek to prevent money laundering and aggressive tax evasion but it must not be at the expense of the privacy and liberty of individuals doing absolutely nothing wrong."@en1
