"The European Parliament has adopted a landmark resolution backing the historic process currently taking place at the UN to negotiate a legally binding instrument to ban nuclear weapons. I am proud to have been a key player in the process to bring political groups together in order to reach agreement. The resolution gives the EU’s External Action Service a clear mandate to engage in the UN process, and play its role as a promoter of peace and international cooperation. All of the EU’s Member States, including nuclear weapons states, are called upon to support and contribute positively to the process. The aim of this process is to create a new international consensus that the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons put them in direct violation of international law, so that they could never be used legally. While the text of the resolution is emphatically strong on these issues, I did support amendments that called more attention to the role of nuclear-armed states, including the UK, and the need for them to move actively towards disarmament."@en1
