"Madam President, this will be one of the last times I vote on budget discharge, in common with other British MEPs. We have spent years shovelling money from the general population to people lucky enough to be working in the Brussels institutions or in one of the parastatal organisations or the various groups of consultants, contractors and others who have turned the EU into a handy living.
I am not really making the point that it would be good for the taxpayer – I have made that point several times before – if the budget were smaller. Let me make a different point. Think of how wonderful would be the boost to the economy if we released all of the people working directly or indirectly for the EU into the private sector to make things and sell things instead of sitting in EU institutions meddling with the business of everybody else. A lot of them are hugely qualified, well—educated, good—natured people with ambition and brains. What a terrible waste of talent that they should all be cooped up in the European Union."@en1
