"I voted in favour of this resolution, co-authored by my colleague Lynn Boylan. Trans-fatty acids (TFAs) are unsaturated fats found in foods obtained from ruminants and in industrially-produced, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Consumption has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, infertility, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity and some types of cancer. High TFA intake is, in particular, a risk factor for developing coronary heart disease – a disease that is conservatively estimated to account for 660 000 deaths annually in the EU, or 14% of overall mortality.
The Commission was required by a 2014 regulation to submit a report to the European Parliament and the Council on the presence of TFAs in foods and was invited to accompany the report with a legislative proposal if appropriate. In its report published in December 2015, the Commission considered possible options to limit TFA consumption in the EU, but refrained from making a legislative proposal.
The resolution highlights that TFA legal limits can bring rapid and significant health benefits, (for example, as they have in Denmark). It calls on the Commission to propose mandatory limits on industrial TFAs in order to reduce their intake as soon as possible, which I support."@en1
