"This motion for a resolution calls on the Commission to establish an EU legislative proposal aiming at eliminating TFAs from the EU food supply chain in the long term, either through the introduction of EU mandatory TFA content labelling or through an EU legal limit on the industrial TFA content of all food. In principle I believe that these issues should be decisions taken by nation states, not at European Union level, and therefore (particularly in view of the decision of the British people on Brexit) I could not vote in favour. Nevertheless, I recognise the health benefits which such policies can give when introduced. I note the relative success of the policy introduced in New York limiting the use of trans fats, and I would be broadly supportive of similar moves in the United Kingdom. I therefore could not vote against this resolution. Consequently, I abstained."@en1
