"Labour MEPs voted today to oppose an increase in the EU budget for 2017 – we believe the first resort should be finding money for EU priorities within existing budget lines. We remain committed to the principle of prioritising the jobs and economic growth agenda whether inside or outside of the European Union and hope to continue close cooperation with our neighbours as a means of protecting the UK economy. The UK’s contribution to the EU budget may be set to increase as a result of the fall in the value of sterling, down nearly a fifth since the referendum, due to the uncertainty caused by Brexit and the chaotic handling of the aftermath by the UK Government, particularly on the question of whether we will remain a member of the Single Market. Labour MEPs will continue to fight to protect our constituents and the UK from any unfavourable deal and work with Labour MPs to ensure crucial areas of EU investment are replaced when we become ineligible for European Union funding post-Brexit.’"@en1
