"My reading certainly is that these proposals from the Commission do not touch our tax rates whatsoever. They have no impact on them. Member States are absolutely free to set their tax rates, and I think we are all happy about that.
You talk about how to make Europe a more attractive place. I think one of the issues that we have to face is that there are mismatches between different tax systems outside Europe and the European tax system, and we have to deal with that. I know the Commission have proposals on that. I have not had time to study them deeply but I hope they will work. I suppose my issue here is that we are giving up a certain amount of tax sovereignty and, if we do that, we have to be sure that the outcomes that are in place are fair to Member States and that Member States can live with them."@en1
