"Mr President, on 23 June the British people voted to leave the European Union. It was a decision that sent shockwaves across the world and should have sprung these institutions into action. Instead, in relation to this budget, it is a signal for just more of the same. Even though this budget will raise spending and reverse cuts, it is not sufficient for some of those in this House today that I have heard call for even more spending. The reality is that it will see hardworking families bear the pain of such decisions. There is no capacity for change. As my colleague Mr Torvalds indicated, it increases spending on administration and agencies and it cuts staff jobs only to create other jobs in new areas.
However, I do find the commitment to provide new funding for victims of terrorism positive. Just for the record of this House, since Mr Torvalds did mention the Titanic in his speech, I come from the constituency and represent the town that actually built the Titanic ship. It was a fine and noble idea to build the largest, most luxurious liner in the world and it was fine when it left Belfast, but it was poor guidance and lack of awareness that saw it hit an iceberg and sink with such disastrous consequences."@en1
