"Madam President, any politician has to be an amazing contortionist because they have to be able to simultaneously sit on the fence and keep both ears to the ground. Well the European Union certainly knows how to tap dance. Back in 2014 David Cameron came back from Brussels waving a piece of paper saying he had got a cut in the EU’s long-term financial plan, the multiannual financial framework, but as usual it came with all sorts of caveats, and all sorts of ways were found to get around it: add to the EU’s income by levying fines on Member States and create a flexibility instrument whose flexibility would put the best gymnast to shame. Over the period of this framework, in real terms we are now talking about over one trillion euro – one trillion with a T – of taxes going to this monolith and spent so inefficiently. They are bending over backwards to get more of your money, but I cannot mix any more metaphors, because I am afraid my minute is up."@en1
