The values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities, are cornerstones of the functioning of the European Union and therefore should be protected at an institutional level. In particular, I believe that the European Parliament and the national parliaments should play a key role in measuring the progress of, and monitoring the compliance with, the shared values of the Union. The pact on DRF would allow for country-specific recommendations, an annual inter-parliamentary debate and arrangements for remedying possible risks and breaches in fundamental rights, all of which would strengthen the core principles that bind the Union."@en1
