"I voted against this report. This report sees Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as the panacea for Europe’s energy issues and is particularly problematic when it comes to its paragraphs on trade, calling for a strong energy chapter in TTIP for a global LNG market, which means in practice that the US will be exporting its fracked gas into Europe.
This report welcomes the Commission proposal on an energy security package, and the EU Energy Union concept is the premise for creating a common LNG strategy. It suggests that LNG and gas storage will facilitate a quick transition to a sustainable, secure and competitive energy market and end dependence on external gas suppliers, as some countries – including Ireland – are still dependent on a single supplier. It calls for the building of new LNG terminals and gas storage facilities, which also means building more supporting pipeline infrastructure.
My GUE/NGL colleagues and others attempted to include aspects on access to energy, affordability of energy, energy as a public social good and the need to tackle energy poverty, objecting to further liberalisation and calling for a ban on hydraulic fracturing. However, none of these were included in the final report, while references to TTIP in relation to energy and trade remain."@en1
