"We live in a world dominated by large international corporations, and where many of our products, from the mobile phones in our pockets to the food in our supermarkets, and the clothes we wear come at the expense of enormous suffering, cruelty and abuse of human rights.
This report is an important step forward in creating a corporate culture in which violations of human rights are simply unacceptable. Companies must play by rules that uphold human decency and basic dignity. As a supporter of the Alternative Trade Mandate, I believe that our economy must not put profit ahead of people and planet. I have also chosen to use a Fairphone (which is made without conflict minerals) and would recommend colleagues to do the same.
Whilst corporations must do more, Member States must create due diligence and reporting rules, and also introduce criminal liability for companies operating under their jurisdiction that violate human rights in other countries. The international community must do more and move towards a binding treaty on business and human rights. I urge the EU national governments to work towards that goal."@en1
