"I voted in favour of this report. An existing directive lays down conditions and technical requirements for issuing navigation certificates for inland waterway vessels valid on all Community inland waterways, including the Rhine. The collection of statistical data is important in creating a sound basis for future decisions regarding the inland waterway transport sector. The data are needed to assess passenger vessel traffic – which has increased over the last few years, in particular on the Danube – as well as the technical improvements to vessels leading to ‘cleaner ships’.
The rapporteur proposed to take this opportunity to extend the regulation’s scope to include additional variables on the transport of passengers, the modernisation of the fleet and inland waterway infrastructure. There was general agreement that it was important for the sector not to be overburdened by the increased data to be provided, and that there should be an assessment of data collected within other frameworks in order to avoid duplication. The first reading was in March 2014, and ongoing negotiations were pursued through trilogues until July this year."@en1
