"I voted against an amendment to reject this report and close the legislative procedure. Thankfully, this was defeated in plenary and the second reading was successful. The existing legislative framework (Regulations (EC) Nos 91/2003, 1192/2003, and 332/2007) for the generation of Union rail transport statistics sets up a double system, offering the possibility for ‘detailed reporting’ and ‘simplified reporting’. The data collected contain information on passenger and goods transport, as well as on traffic flows and accidents. The Commission proposal’s primary aim is to update, simplify and optimise the existing system. That information is necessary to monitor and develop the EU transport policy. Having sound rail transport statistics is necessary and important for monitoring rail transport and its development. I welcome the simplification of the reporting procedure and favour the extension of data collection to include rail infrastructure. The text agreed in the trilogue is accompanied by an amendment to the existing Memorandum of Understanding between Eurostat and the European Railway Agency, to include statistics on the deployment of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), and by a Memorandum of Understanding between EUROSTAT and DG Move to ensure that there is better data sharing and no duplication of data collection."@en1
