"I voted in favour of this report on the implementation of the Food Contact Materials Regulation. This report deals with food contact materials, which mainly means food packaging (but can also refer to food utensils or factories where food is made), and EU regulation or lack thereof covering these products. Currently only 4 out of 17 of the FCMs identified for measures are actually regulated, which means there is are a lot of packaging substances, e.g. printing ink, paper, metal, adhesives and varnishes, which are not covered. There is increasing concern regarding the migration of chemicals from food contact materials into the food we eat. This can be exacerbated by various factors, including the length of time packaging has contact with the food, the ratio of surface area of food to the material, whether the product is heated, and whether the foods are surrounded by liquids or high-fat substances. For these reasons I voted in favour."@en1
