"Madam President, the proposed food contact materials legislation represents a typically EU approach to speculative consumer concern. It will be prescriptive and oppressive, stifling innovation in a fast-moving sector that continuously monitors and responds to consumer concerns. The last thing that any food manufacturer wants to risk is its corporate reputation by supplying a product in suspect packaging. Consumers can now be highly effective in influencing corporate behaviour through social media campaigns that would be unimaginable 20 years ago. There is now a strong demand from certain elements of society to know exactly how their food is produced and packaged. Those suppliers who show reluctance to divulge information are quickly named and shamed. It is down to these suppliers to demonstrate a scientific argument strong enough to defeat empty rhetoric and clearly and honestly label their products so that the consumer can make the ultimate choice. I can well remember fish and chips being sold wrapped in discarded newspapers before we joined the EU. I can never remember anyone refusing to purchase them for this reason."@en1
