"Mr President, I was delighted last week at the signing of the much overdue Colombian peace deal after 52 years of violent conflict. The result of the referendum, therefore, is hugely disappointing, but we must not allow it to be seen as a knockout blow. It is important that the international community now work to support President Santos in finding a way through and that there be no resumption of violence. Conflicts are always unique, each existing in response to their own context of time, location and history. In drawing comparisons and correlations, we should always do so with caution. But I cannot help but look to Northern Ireland at this moment, or more precisely, the Good Friday Belfast Agreement. We see in that deal the price of peace. Yes, it means accepting amnesties, elements of criminal immunity, and inviting into the political fold those previously seen to be beyond the pale politically, but nearly 20 years on, we do not talk of that price, but of the great success. The peace deal with FARC was about looking to the future. The referendum result has, sadly, been about delivering by looking to the past. Today, I strongly encourage Colombia to look again to the future, peace and prosperity."@en1
