"Madam President, the war in Syria has raged for over five years now, but despite being an evident threat to European security, it would seem the EU is determined to continue flip-flopping on this issue. There is no better example of this than the recent multi-billion-euro deal approved by the EU to supply Iran Air with up to 118 modern Airbus commercial aircraft. This is an airline associated with accusations of making over 200 flights this year alone to bring military communications equipment, strategic arms and military personnel to supply and support Hezbollah and the Assad regime, both of which are sanctioned by the EU. We are now in a position where European-built aircraft could be used to supply arms and equipment to forces ranged against NATO. That is why I am today calling for the UK intervention in Syria to stop. The EU is simply out of its depth in dealing with this crisis in Syria, despite wanting ever greater involvement. It is time to learn the lessons of Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, and allow better-qualified actors to solve this most complex of problems."@en1
