"I abstained on this report. Sinn Féin met with Caterpillar workers and representatives, including those from the north of Ireland, and in view of the situation as they explained it, we drafted a strong alternative motion which put the workers at its heart. In trying to find agreement for a joint motion with the other groups in Parliament, the strong references to workers’ rights were watered down by those on the right of Parliament. In conjunction with this, the right of Parliament not only managed to remove the workers as central, but they shaped the motion in a way which put employers and shareholders at the centre. Additionally, the references to the Europe 2020 strategy which runs in line with the European Semester means that many of the amendments linked to Europe 2020 cannot be achieved because countries are in fiscal straitjackets. These, as well as other problematic Articles, meant that I could not support the Joint Resolution as a whole. For these reasons, I abstained."@en1
