"Northern Ireland has for many years been the focus of organised criminality led by paramilitaries and in particular republican terror gangs in border areas. I have therefore seen the dreadful consequences of fuel and money laundering, of smuggling, on our economy and the success of local communities. It is vital that we combat those involved in this activity. We must break down the structures that govern this illegal behaviour and protect those citizens who are at risk. It will also come as no shock that I believe it should be primarily the role of national crime-fighting authorities to lead these efforts. Instead of promoting more integration of policing, investigation and legal systems, this Parliament must better support Member States to tackle corruption and organised crime at the grassroots. The National Crime Agency is now fully operational in Northern Ireland, working hard to prevent, detect and punish those responsible in these crimes."@en1
