"Madam President, like so many of us, I was shocked and appalled when I saw that the former Commission President Barroso was going to work for Goldman Sachs, one of the banks that was implicated in causing the financial and eurozone crisis. There is no doubt that history will judge this as a disgraceful cynical move. I am very glad that the EU Ombudsman, and now the European Commission, have listened to citizens and Commission staff petitions and concerns about this, and that they are now investigating the case. There is no doubt that the Commission needs to tighten its ethics rules for Commissioners and now is the time. It is also an opportunity for citizens to get involved in EU politics and speak up; to call out conflict of interests and corruption where it is manifested. The EU belongs to its citizens, and has the democratic tools to listen to those concerns and to investigate and penalise Mr Barroso. I will continue to pursue this case and will continue to call for transparent and clean politics in the UK and in the EU."@en1
