"Madam President, the Bahamas papers revealed again the central role played in the murky global network of tax havens by the British overseas territories, former colonies and the City of London itself. In the first session of our inquiry committee, we heard that the London property market boom feeds on tax avoidance.
As with the Panama Papers, another member of the UK Government has been implicated. Our Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, was named as being a Director of two companies in the Bahamas. Secrecy means we actually cannot tell what companies she controlled, what they were doing, how much money she earned and how much tax was actually avoided. This lack of accountability is precisely what tax havens offer and is why people use them. Our Panama Papers Committee is dedicated to shining a light into these dark corners and I will be insisting that Amber Rudd is called before us. The ease with which the Home Secretary was able to avoid answering questions about her involvement in the Bahamas is evidence of the weakness of democratic accountability in the UK. I am glad that we will have a chance to tackle this during our work in the Panama Papers Committee."@en1
