"Madam President, coming from Ireland I have great sympathy for Greece. Like the Greeks, we were in the bailout programme, but unlike Greece we implemented the programme and are now getting the benefits from it. Greece, unfortunately, especially the first Syriza Government, engaged in populist trickery which didn’t pay off. Of course Greeks are not the only ones to engage in that. A few weeks ago Commissioner Moscovici engaged in populism as well when he said that EUR 13 billion of the Apple tax was available to Ireland to build houses and schools etc., knowing full well that it could not become available until after the court case in several years’ time; and also, on the Commission’s own admission, that money may belong to other Member States, not Ireland, so let’s forget about populism and engage in realism. And where Greece is concerned, realism means, firstly, implementing the programme; secondly, introducing reforms; and thirdly, tackling corruption. In that way, Greece will gradually reach the prosperity which the great people of Greece deserve after many years of austerity. It is the only way."@en1
