"The EU Solidarity Fund is meant to assist Member States in recovering from natural disasters. As the name suggests, it is another expression of the EU value of social solidarity.
I joined fellow Labour MEPs to press the UK Tory government to apply for Solidarity Funds when the North of the UK, and particularly my own constituency of the North West of England, were hit by devastating floods in late 2015. The government eventually agreed to request the funds and filed a partial application, but shamefully, it has since failed to complete that application.
In the meantime, Greece has filed an application which has been approved for support after an earthquake. It is sad to see that while the Tories had the opportunity to receive more funds to support communities in the North West, they have chosen not to pursue this."@en1
