"Madam President, our trade policy can and should be a crucial tool to promote human rights, and this is what this regulation is all about. The EU rightly rejects the use of torture and the death penalty, and the way that we trade must reflect these fundamental values. This legislation will ensure that no EU business can profit from torture and that no company trading for goods for execution or torture can access the EU market. Effective enforcement will be absolutely crucial. But it is worth reminding ourselves that, because this legislation is from the EU – the biggest trading bloc in the world – it can have a real impact in setting global standards in a way that no country could ever achieve unilaterally. I support this legislation and I very much hope that, despite Brexit in my own country, both the UK and the rest of the EU will continue to strive together for a strong, value-based trade policy worldwide."@en1
