"Madam President, this is a very important topic and I think it highlights again the amount of good work that the European Union endeavours to do and its efforts to achieve a good standard of human rights across the globe, especially in areas with which we have dealings in relation to trade. I would like to compliment the rapporteur, Marietje Schaake, for her good work: as always, it has been comprehensive and dedicated. This is really about closing the loopholes, and that is what has been achieved to a large degree. You will never, of course, close loopholes one hundred percent, and it has been pointed out that some goods traded could be used both to save and to kill people. Be that as it may, movements such as abolishing the death penalty are something that we are very strong on, and this is something we have to work towards continually. So this is a positive action by the European Union to help promote human rights across the globe and that is to be commended."@en1
