"Mr President, I think as a Member of this Parliament for 27 years that is the first time I have ever been told that I can have so much speaking time. Even though it is on a Thursday afternoon I certainly enjoy it.
We are all rightly proud of the achievements of our athletes from across the different sporting codes and disciplines. I was delighted to join the thousands of others from Northern Ireland recently to watch our national football team play in the European championships with great honour. It was also a great pleasure also to watch the Olympic success of Team GB this summer who were quite astonishing from my point of view.
However, all too often we see the bodies purportedly governing sports and others tarnish the integrity and reputation of their sport through various forms of corruption. I wish the newly-elected President of UEFA well, and I certainly hope his appointment sets football’s governing bodies back on the right direction after recent controversies.
Match-fixing, wherever it may be found, is a blight on our sporting communities, as has already been outlined here this afternoon. In Europe and across the world and at every level, action must be taken to root it out. For the sake of the future of sport, all corruption, including match-fixing, must be tackled in the strongest and most measured way possible. I am therefore supportive of the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions.
The Commission should take a consistent and fair approach to all Member States in relation to this. I also agree with colleagues that any review of this should call the Commission to embed such principles into the funding criteria for any programme related to sport.
We should also note the good work that has been done in tackling this by the sporting bodies themselves. I certainly welcome the initiatives of the rugby world such as Keep Rugby Onside and the integrity programmes, which have been widely praised by authorities such as the UK’s Gambling Commission. I did not make the three minutes but I did my best to get there, but anything I have left I am sure Ms Tomašić can use up!"@en1
