"I supported this report which looks at the potential of Europe’s SMEs to create employment. SMEs make up almost 99% of European companies and form the backbone of the EU economy, providing two thirds of private-sector employment in the EU. However, SMEs face specific challenges such as skills shortages/mismatches, regulatory uncertainty and administrative burdens, as well as the problem of undeclared work, which larger companies often do not.
The report emphasises the importance of a stable regulatory environment and improved regulatory efficiency and enforcement as a way to reduce SME costs and establish a level playing field. I was particularly pleased to support provisions emphasising the need for matching skills and qualifications with market demands and promoting entrepreneurship for young people, specifically development of vocational education training that facilitates work-based learning and apprenticeships, and the encouragement of partnerships between employers and educators to help young people to acquire entrepreneurial skills, as well as to better recognise and validate non-formal education and skills. I also support the call on the Commission to conduct an impact assessment regarding the implications of TTIP, and of granting China market economy status (MES), on the number and quality of jobs in the SME sector in Member States."@en1
