"Mr President, I would like thank the rapporteur for the work that has been done in bringing us to this point. There has been a lot of discussion and a lot of agreement. We all, of course, want to see full employment, we want to see quality employment and, naturally, we want to see workers treated with respect and valued for the contribution that they make to their particular employment. We have seen much social progress in the European Union since its establishment. I see it completely where I come from in Ireland, and I continually outline the benefits that have come, following our membership of the European Union, to those who are in employment. We also need to see that workers are respected and given adequate rest time and holiday time. Maternity leave has been very important. We are in the process of reviewing that now, and it is extremely important for females to keep them in the workforce. The whole issue of paternity leave is also very important and needs to be addressed. I am glad that we are moving somewhat in that area. With such high levels of unemployment among our young people, this is one of the tragedies of our generation. I really welcome the work that the Commissioner is doing in this area in continuing to support the Youth Guarantee and ensuring that young people are given proper employment and support in gaining the necessary skills required in today’s workplaces. This has been a very positive development and one of the real shining lights of the previous Parliament and this Parliament. I thank the Commissioner for her work in this area."@en1
