"I voted against this report in line with the ETUC and some of my S&D colleagues’ position, as this new free trade agreement with Africa will require African countries to open their market not only on goods but also on services, investments and intellectual property, which might weaken their economic development. As a supporter of the Alternative Trade Mandate I have worked to promote the view that trade must always put people and planet ahead of profit.
Many studies (South Centre, ILO, etc.) show the negative impact that these kinds of agreements can have on sustainable development. The EPA in the current form would jeopardise food security and have an adverse impact on the agricultural sector of the SADC countries. In the long term, the EPA could impede industrialisation. The Agreement will also lead to a loss of government tariff revenue that is used for measures such as to finance social protection. In view of this concern, I urge my colleagues in Parliament to engage in negotiations that put the respect of labour rights, the Agenda 2030, the growth and development of SADC countries, food security, social protection and the environment at the top of our priorities."@en1
