"Mr President, I welcome the summit but it appears that the historic opportunity to find a desperately needed global solution to the crisis has been lost. Some governments are rejecting the plan to resettle 10% of the world’s refugees annually and have delayed any chance of a deal until 2018. We cannot allow the politics of fear to paralyse us and allow this humanitarian crisis and suffering go on.
Policies focused on deterrents and building walls are doomed to fail. Europe must redouble its efforts in addressing the sources of the refugee crisis and not just the symptoms. This means providing more support to developing countries to get refugees access to employment and education opportunities.
However, maintaining aid is not enough. One in five people in Lebanon are refugees. By comparison, there is one refugee for every 530 people in the UK. We must step up the responsibility sharing, not responsibility shifting. War and instability, poverty and climate change all mean that people will keep trying to come to Europe in search of refuge or a better life. Only if we act globally can we find effective and lasting solutions to this crisis. Europe must lead the way and set an example."@en1
