"Innovation is, by definition, a cross-cutting concept. I therefore welcome the effort made in this report to build synergies across policy areas and better coordinate funding tools that are crucial for the sustainable development of regions, in both urban and rural areas. I attended the European Symposium on Science (ESOF) 2016 last July in my region in Manchester, and where I co-hosted with my Greek S&D colleague Eva Kaili a session on the natural links between the Arts and Science. This session confirmed that there is a demand in both communities to work beyond the obvious and to change the mentality of working in silos. Attending businesses, scientists and artists all argued in favour of a more global approach to innovation, and to jointly explore their common impact on societies. For me this should be the essence of ‘smart specialisation’ strategies. Smart specialisation should not only be seen as a tick box exercise for jobs and growth, but help us answer ecological, social, economic and cultural challenges. And we must invest in creative thinking and transferable skills if the EU wants to be at the forefront of innovation in a fast changing world."@en1
